New York Cityraised Phoebe is the daughter of former Broadway producer Joseph Cates. As a child, she attended Hewitt School and late the Professional Children’s School and then the Julliard School. Next, she earned a scholarship to the School of American Ballet. However, although she was a good dancer, a leg injury prevented Phoebe from pursuing a career as a ballet dancer, so at the age of 15, she initiated her career as a model, and appeared in several teen magazines such as Seventeen and Elle among others. She became very famous as a model, but was not really happy with her career choice, leading her to start acting.

Cates debuted in the movie “Paradise” when she was only 17 years old. She later became more popular as she worked in the movie “Fast Times At Ridgemont High” in which she played the role of Linda Barrett, alongside several famous actors including Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh and others. She was also noted for her performance in the movie “Gremlins” in 1984, in which she portrayed the role of Kate Beringer, then in “Gremlins 2” movie in 1990. The comedy horror movies were a hit in the market, making Phoebe along with her co-stars Zach Galligan and Hoyt Axton famous in Hollywood. Until today, she has worked in almost 20 movies and television series. Being a part of these successful projects has obviously added to her riches over the years.

Phoebe left her career as an actress in 1994 to give time for her family. She returned to acting for a short while in 2001, and performed in the movie “The Anniversary Party” and then retired from acting permanently. In 2005, she opened a boutique on New York’s Madison Avenue named “Blue Tree”, and now enjoys life as the owner of this successful outlet.

Regarding her personal life, 52 years old Phoebe now leads a married life. She has been married to Academy award winning actor Kevin Kline since 1989, and is mother to their three children. #Quote
1If the film, play or any project I'm involved in requires some sort of violence or nudity to advance the plot, scene or character in any way, then I would be considered unprofessional not to oblige. Of course, I want to make sure -- and I think I always have -- that the scenes are shot in good taste. I try to have some control; now that I know what I'm capable of including in a contract, I can continue that control. Nudity is not something I necessarily want to avoid and yet it's not the most fun thing in the world to do. It's part of the job as far as I'm concerned because you bare yourself emotionally and that's just as terrifying as baring yourself physically. It's all part of acting.
2In this business, if a girl wants a career, she has to be willing to strip. If you've got a good bod, then why not show it?
3"I was only 17 when I did my nude scenes in Paradise (1982). They were serious and more difficult because they were not easily justified. But the topless scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) was funny, which made it easy".
4Kids today are much more independent than their parents were. We're really into getting jobs and we mature sexually much earlier than a generation ago. Or, at least, we are involved in sex earlier.
5Young people are more sophisticated today, thanks to magazines and movies and even porno cable television. As a New Yorker I think I've matured faster than other young people. I'm street smart.
