The Meet Market: Georgetown's Social Safeway Returns
EVERYONE’S FAVORITE THING about Safeway stores in D.C. is their nicknames. There’s the Soviet Safeway (long lines, empty shelves), the Not-So-Safeway (or the Un-Safeway, your pick), the Secret Safeway. There is also, of course, the Social Safeway: the Georgetown store where mingling is on everyone’s shopping list.
Actually, make that “was,” because it’s been closed for renovations. That changes Thursday, when the store (at 1855 Wisconsin Ave. NW) reopens as a 24-hour “lifestyle” location. Along with the vast wine department and gelato bar, there will be some healthy features, including the largest organic produce department in the city, a 9-foot-long gluten-free zone and a natural products aisle, pictured.
